I just want to confirm that Dutch self-adhesive stamps are generally easy to take off paper using cold water. However, I noticed that getting self-adhesive stamps off paper also depends on the type of paper that they have been attached to. I often found when comparing two identical (Dutch) stamps that one can be easily taken off and the other being impossible. So I assume that the paper of the envelop matters a lot.

Self-adhesive stamps from The Netherlands have no problems, you can just use cold water.

This is link to youtube about solvent for removing S/A stamps from envelopes, it's American, so I don't know if all this solvents available in your country, but if you didn't watch this before the link is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3TwMX8Be7c

the sticky label remover "Un-Du" some people using to remove S/A stamps from paper.

I didn't try any of this adhesive removers myself as I am not sure if all these stuff damaging stamps (not strait after using, but in few years time).

For the Czech Republic and Slovakia postage stamps lukewarm water is sufficient

hello everybody -- I mostly can take self adhesive off. i'm using "washing benzine" (that's how it's named here) I leave the stamp(s) in for 1 minute and nearly all come off. then I use powder to stop them gluying.

Hi all - why not just leave them on the paper and clip around them leaving about 2mm margin. They will fit in most printed albums spaces. That's what I do and it works just fine for me. Also saves a lot of time you could be spending on other stamps.

Hello australia does self adhesive. It really depends on the stamps the latest ones circulating have little cuts in them to prevent people from re-using them but if you are gentle enough they can come off. I only get the occasional difficult one.

I just tried using a product Bestine Solvent purchased in the US and it works great, using tongs and a credit card I was able to remove stuck paper to the back of a self stick stamp, it didn't remove the gum, I used baby powder to cover the sticky glue. It's is best not to try to remove the glue, if you do the stamp thickness will be very thin.

Natalia_Golubko I don't collect ATM stamps from any country so have never had any reason to try them, sorry

Hi together!
There is no problem to soak off Austrian self adhesives. Just use warm water, as usual.

hello, after a bad experience of trying soaking danish stamps from 2017, I found this link http://blog.stamps.org/2016/11/21/changes-for-danish-swedish-stamps/ .... so be careful for danish and swedish stamps it seems that for the most recent we can't soak them only with water as we used to do....

guyana1230, even pure citrus air freshener does'nt work for spanish ATM stamps. They are crumbled of any liquid influence. May be you know how to unstick them without any damage?
24 Jan 2018, 23:31:13
Guyana is correct. Here in the US we have a product called Pure Citrus that is sold on the air freshner aisle. Its 100% Orange Peel Oil.

Here is a link on how to remove the stamps using Pure Citrus....

Hope this helps!

Pure citrus air freshener works best, then use an old atm card or similar to remove the glue from the back of the stamp, works every time for ALL countries

Crazz, be careful sending self-adhesive stamps in a such way to Russia. In russian post offices sometimes good stamps are torn off the covers and postcards, like this

Your stamps with their original back paper will be light booty for such robbers.
As for me, I always take off self-adhesive stamps with a solvent like hexane, pentane, heptane (domestic aerosol WD-40, citrus air refreshener Limonene).

I going to leave the self stamp on the original back paper, glue the back paper to the letter, maybe my trade partner will soak the stamp or peel off the stamp from the back paper and put powder on the sticky part
17 Dec 2017, 23:56:36
I going to leave the self stamp on the originial
27 Feb 2017, 03:07:35
usually I use lighter fluid on the back of the paper then I use a small screwdriver (the kind you use to fix your glasses), finally I add baby powder (talcum) on the glue. It could take you 2-3 stamps to get the hang of it so start with very common stamps. BUT I have found stamps that this do not work on, TNT from Netherlands and Christmas benefit stamp´s from Denmark and Föröyjar.

I have seen someone on fb recommending to use white vinegar for soaking self adhesives. Has anyone tried it here? I am planning to try it once I buy some. I will update you on the results!

Good evening/afternoon/morning everybody (it depends where are each of you);

I remove the self-adhesives stamps from the paper using fluid lighter. Later I cover the reverse with poder, because the gum is active again. This system works with stamps from Spain, England, Ireland, Portugal, France, Belgium, USA, Italy, Brazil, Latvia, Estonia and Russia. Even with fruit stamps from Tonga, although it's much more difficult an it's easier to damage the stamp. I haven't tried with other countries, but I'll tell you when I try it.

Good morning Luke.

For France they take off with lukewarm water. Except the series "Environment" or "Protection of the earth" and the "marianne" of the current series which takes off with scarlet water.

Brazilian regular adhesive issues just could be soaked with benzine.
06 Jan 2017, 08:43:52
wow im actually surprised at how many can be soaked off paper ...and that i actually dont know how it´s done correctly as i rarely succeed in it :D so im sending stamps on paper quite often for that reason too...

New Zealand issues both types and self adhesives are easy to soak off.
29 Sep 2016, 18:53:32
Israel is possible to be soaked

I vaguely remember a self-adhesive Indonesian stamp. It was round and football-themed. Green background, I think.

As far as I know, most of the Finnish stamps can be soaked.
23 Sep 2016, 23:01:57
The Russian I have soaked was easy to get off, so have the Finnish been, but I haven't tryed to soak many from Finland, so I am not sure about them.
Thanks for your informantion :-)
23 Sep 2016, 22:17:10
as far as I know there's no self-adhesive stamps from Indonesia. CMIIW, I mostly only buy flora & fauna mint stamps so I can be mistaken :-)

any information about Finnish and Russian stamps? I got a lot of them but not sure again if they can be soaked.
18 Sep 2016, 08:29:36
Thank you all, it's very valueable knowledge for me, so keep writing :-)

Poland: issued very few self-adhesives. The ones from the early 1990s are very difficult to soak, but as the adhesive dries over the years they may actually remove themselves from the paper without you having to do anything. You may encounter a problem soaking regular Polish stamps from the early 1990s even though they were not self-adhesives (prime examples: eagle and coniferous tree definitives of the period).

I've not encountered self-adhesive definitives from Belarus that would be properly removed from paper. They're either on paper or destroyed. I have not tried myself and keep them on paper.

For Italian stamps I use nail polish remover but after the back of the stamp you have to put some talcum powder.
13 Aug 2016, 22:21:50
From Sierra Leone too, impossible to be soaked.
09 Aug 2016, 08:44:33
I don't know if Tonga still issues self-adhesive stamps or not, but from I discovered, their self-adhesives from the 60s and 70s couldn't be soaked. I got one of their banana stamps still on its original back, never used. I also got a pineapple stamp they issued on paper. I guess the US Postal History Foundation here in Tucson, Arizona couldn't soak any of those or weren't sure how.
18 Jul 2016, 00:30:20
Norwegian personal stamps can not be soaked. The rest can be soaked, but sometimes the glue stick to paper and ruin the stamps when you try to take it of.
17 Jul 2016, 09:41:28
Thanks to all for the informations, very useful. I am trying to avoid to begin to collect stamps from a country where it can't get off paper, as it looks wierd in the collection :-)
If others have more information please bring it on :-)

USA: most of them are impossible, although some appear to have a "second skin" of some white glue stuff that you can remove easily. Never tried with benzine, or charcoal accelerant, I think most commercial products are based on that. With very hot water you can remove most of paper, but it remains a sticky surface you have to cover on with powder...
In summary, to agree with Lipp, the best option is to keep them on paper...
Regards, Daniel

Brasil is impossible to soak the definitives.
Australia is easy to soak, but I think the country just have comemmemoratives adhesive stamps.

Hello Luke, it is a problem for everyone.

France: impossible to soak deffinitives.
Spain: Some of them are impossible to soak, some others, better, still issuing "normal" non self adhesive stamps.
Italy: very difficult to soak the deffinitives.
Ireland: impossible to soak labels
UK: impossible to soak definitive machins.
Canada, Germany, and Switzerland: easier to soak, but sometimes, the soaked stamp is very thin.

I´m trying with benzine, it is neccesary to put powder in the back.
There are some other products, it depends on the country.
But, in my opinion, the better option is leave the paper on.

Regards!
